A tired worker is an injury waiting to happen. Fatigue affects judgement, reaction time, concentration and movement, increasing the risk of mistakes and workplace injuries. It can also build up over several days, so even workers who don't feel particularly tired may be affected.
Four quick tips
Spot the signs. Slower reactions, difficulty concentrating, more mistakes and irritability can all point to fatigue.
Build in recovery. Regular breaks, adequate rest between shifts and realistic schedules help workers stay alert and focused.
Plan high-risk tasks carefully. Avoid scheduling physically demanding or high-risk work at the end of long days or weeks.
Encourage workers to speak up. Make it easy for people to raise concerns about fatigue before it becomes a safety issue.
Why it matters
Tired people are more likely to take shortcuts, make poorer decisions and lose focus. Managing fatigue is an important part of keeping your team safe.
Fatigue can increase the risk of workplace injuries, but it's also important not to ignore aches, pains or injuries that are already affecting you. Pushing through when you're tired or injured can make things worse.
If pain or an injury has been slowing you down, getting it assessed early can help get you back on track. You don't need to just push through it.
No GP referral is needed. If you've been injured, come straight to us. We'll assess your injury, lodge your ACC claim and get your treatment underway.
