Physiotherapy strapping can be a simple but effective way to support an injury while you're recovering.
At Focused Physiotherapy, we use a range of strapping techniques to help support muscles, joints and ligaments. After assessing your injury, we'll determine whether strapping is appropriate and incorporate it into a treatment plan designed around your goals. Our team provides sports strapping and injury management from our clinics in Ōtorohanga, Cambridge, Te Awamutu, Beerescourt, Mangakino and Hamilton.
How does strapping work?
Sports strapping may help by improving your body's awareness of where it is and how it's moving.
When tape is applied correctly, it provides additional sensory feedback through the skin. This can improve your awareness of how a joint is moving, helping you feel more stable, maintain balance, and move with greater confidence.
For many people, this increased awareness makes returning to sport, work, or everyday activities feel more comfortable and controlled.
When might strapping help?
Strapping can be helpful for a wide range of musculoskeletal injuries and conditions. Depending on your assessment, your physiotherapist may recommend strapping to:
Support a sprained ankle or sore knee.
Help protect a recovering joint during activity.
Provide additional support when returning to sport.
Reduce discomfort while carrying out everyday activities.
Complement a broader rehabilitation programme.
Because every injury is different, strapping should be tailored to the individual rather than used as a one-size-fits-all solution.
What does the evidence tell us?
Research suggests sports taping can positively influence joint stability, movement patterns, muscle activation, and proprioception in some situations.
While taping won't prevent every injury or replace a rehabilitation programme, it can be an effective tool for reducing discomfort, supporting movement, and building confidence during recovery.
Many people also report feeling more confident when an injured area is taped. That added reassurance can make it easier to return to activity while continuing to rehabilitate the injury.
Strapping works best as part of a treatment plan
Strapping is one tool we may use as part of your rehabilitation—it isn't designed to fix the underlying problem on its own.
Our physiotherapists will assess the cause of your injury, recommend the most appropriate treatment, and use strapping where it is likely to support your recovery. This may also include hands-on treatment, exercise rehabilitation, strength and mobility work, and advice to help you return to the activities you enjoy.
If ongoing taping is likely to benefit you, we're also happy to teach you how to apply it yourself, so you can manage it confidently between appointments.
